LUCKNOW, Aug. 11 -- Lucknow University students continued to protest the alleged increase in hostel mess fees and the withdrawal of the installment facility, and submitted a memorandum to the Dean, Students' Welfare, on Monday. Earlier, on Saturday, the university had clarified that there has been no fee hike in the hostel mess charges and the apparent difference in fee figures is due to a revision in refundable caution money. For boys, the amount shown as Rs 37,738 to Rs 40,000 and for girls, Rs 29,192 to Rs 32,000 includes an increase in caution money from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000. The university clarified that this Rs 1,000 increase is fully refundable and will be returned to students at the time of leaving the hostel/mess. Therefore, it cannot be considered as an actual fee hike, spokesperson prof Mukul Srivastava had said. The students stated that instead of the earlier provision of depositing the fee in two installments, the university now requires students to deposit the entire amount in a single installment. In the memorandum, the students demanded that the existing system of depositing the fee in two installments be continued, and proper facilities be ensured given the deteriorating condition of the hostels. NSUI state general secretary Shubham Kharwar said the condition of university hostels remains poor and students are not getting proper arrangements for food quality and living facilities. "Frequent changes in mess tenders have adversely affected the quality and hygiene of food provided to students. The university administration must restore the previous fee provision and the two-installment payment system at the earliest, failing which students will launch a massive protest," said Kharwar....
