New Delhi, July 23 -- The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed a resolution suspending Trinamool Congress (TMC) lawmaker Kalyan Banerjee for the remainder of the Monsoon Session over alleged use of unparliamentary language against a woman MP. Banerjee, however, called the allegations fabricated. The Monsoon Session is scheduled to end on August 13. The action comes weeks after Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar formally complained to Speaker Om Birla, accusing Banerjee of "repeated verbal abuse" and misogynistic conduct inside Parliament. She alleged that Banerjee had verbally abused her repeatedly on the floor of the House and sought his expulsion from the Lok Sabha, alleging that other women MPs faced similar treatment from him. Denying the allegations, Banerjee questioned why Ghosh Dastidar did not raise the matter with the Chair immediately if the remarks were made during House proceedings. "What would they do by suspending me? They can't throw me out of the House. They are 20 MPs. Did they even hold a meeting in Kolkata? They don't even have 20 votes in Bengal. They are traitors," Banerjee said. Ghosh Dastidar said, "Kalyan Banerjee keeps attacking women, uses foul language and uses abusive language. He slandered a woman MP, so he was suspended."
