LUCKNOW, July 2 -- The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the installation of Doppler weather radars in Lucknow, Jhansi, Varanasi, Aligarh and Azamgarh to strengthen weather forecasting and the state's early disaster warning system. The decision was taken at a meeting of the State Executive Committee of the Uttar Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority chaired by chief secretary SP Goyal on Wednesday. The committee approved Rs.1.54 crore for installing the radars. Goyal said relief and rescue operations during natural disasters should be carried out in a more prompt, effective and coordinated manner. It also approved Rs.2.72 crore for implementing a snakebite mitigation programme in 18 districts and Rs.1.73 crore to display disaster relief norms and compensation rates on every gram panchayat building. The committee further cleared the creation of a virtual disaster management cadre across various state government departments, besides approving Rs.33.92 crore to reduce human-wildlife conflict.
