Leopard killed after being hit by speeding truck on nat'l highway
PRAYAGRAJ, April 3 -- A male leopard was killed late Wednesday night in the Manda area of Prayagraj's trans-Yamuna region after being hit by a speeding truck on National Highway 76 near Dighiya Bazaar.
According to reports, the leopard came onto the highway from the direction of a nearby railway track and was trying to cross the road when a speeding truck heading toward Mirzapur hit the animal around 12:40 am. The impact was severe, leading to the leopard's death on the spot, officials said.
Upon receiving information, the Manda police and the Police Response Vehicle (PRV) 112 team promptly reached the spot. Dighiya police outpost in-charge SI Vicky Gupta, along with police personnel, secured the area and informed the forest department.
A team from the Meja forest range, including forest inspector Ashutosh Singh and Ramchandra, arrived at the scene and took the leopard's body in custody. The forest department later confirmed that a postmortem examination of the animal was conducted on Thursday morning, followed by its last rites.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident and have urged drivers to exercise caution, especially near forested zones.
The incident drew significant interest among local residents as news of the leopard's presence spread quickly. A large crowd gathered at the scene after the animal was found dead on the road.
Locals expressed relief over the leopard's death, noting that with a nearby school and regular morning movement of children, farmers, and commuters, the situation could have turned dangerous had the animal survived....
