LUCKNOW, Sept. 17 -- Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly speaker Satish Mahana on Wednesday said that in a democratic system, the role of the legislature should not be limited merely to enacting laws. Addressing a workshop organised under the international platform of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) in Cape Town, South Africa, on the topic "Post-Legislative Scrutiny: Connecting Parliament with the Public", Mahana said there must also be an effective mechanism to review and monitor the impact and implementation of enacted laws. "Parliamentary systems must undergo necessary changes to keep pace with evolving technological conditions. Given the digital age and the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI), there is a need to develop systems that make the legislature more effective, transparent and people-centric," Mahana said. Stressing the need to enhance public participation in the democratic process, Mahana said the stronger the dialogue between the legislature and the public, the more vibrant and participatory a democracy becomes. Highlighting India's vibrant democratic tradition and extensive public participation, he said parliamentary institutions must continuously evolve with the times.
