LDA to target illegal commercial use of basement parkings
LUCKNOW, June 27 -- Expanding its enforcement drive after the deadly Aliganj fire tragedy, the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) will now also target buildings where basements sanctioned for parking in the approved map have been illegally converted into commercial spaces and sold or leased. Officials said the next phase of the drive is likely to begin from Saturday, subject to police force availability.
The move comes days after the Sector D, Aliganj fire that killed 15 people and injured nine, prompting the LDA to intensify inspections of buildings violating sanctioned maps and mandatory fire safety norms.
LDA Zone-1 zonal incharge Devansh Trivedi said enforcement teams have identified commercial hubs, including Patrakarpuram and other prominent localities, where basement parking spaces have allegedly been converted into shops and commercial establishments. "The drive will begin as soon as police personnel are made available," he said.
Officials said the authority is currently inspecting buildings for multiple violations, including unauthorised commercial use in residential buildings, blocked or inadequate entry and exit points, non-functional fire-fighting systems and parking area encroachment. Buildings found compromising public safety are being prioritised for action.
During a joint inspection by LDA and Fire Department officials, the authority served a notice to a prominent real estate developer in Vibhuti Khand after detecting serious internal deviations. Officials found that fire alarm systems in several units were non-functional, while water lines connected to fire-fighting equipment had been locked, rendering the safety system ineffective. Inspection teams also found violations at prominent hotels where basement parking spaces had allegedly been altered in violation of approved building plans. In Viraj Khand, around 10 notices were issued after detecting deviations during inspections. Officials said sealing action in these cases has been deferred because of the ongoing Muharram and arrangements will be made after the prescribed notice period....
