Lawyers end strike, sub registrar office functioning to resume today
Agra, July 2 -- Working at offices of sub registrar in Agra will resume from Thursday after lawyers and deed writers withdrew their two-week-old strike on Wednesday.
Lawyers had gone on a strike against a proposal by the state government to implement e-registration of sale deeds in certain cases and opening of front offices at the Tehsil.
According to Arvind Kumar Dubey, general secretary of Tehsil Bar Association, Agra, assurances were given by district authorities communicating that the state government has no plans to privatise the working at Tehsil offices, including sub registrar office.
"The lawyers and deed writers in Agra along with their counterparts in other districts of state had gone on a strike in protest of the orders communicated vide letter dated June 04, 2026 for implementation of e-registration of certain sale deeds and opening of front offices in Tehsil offices all over the state," said Dubey, while talking to Hindustan Times on Wednesday.
The strike led to no sale deeds, agreements, marriages etc being registered for the past two weeks. Stamp vendors and others linked too had supported the strike call.
However on Monday, the said order issued on June 4, was withdrawn by the state government.
"The SDM Sadar, Agra, Sachin Rajput, along with officials from the registration department came on spot on Wednesday and assured that there were no plans for privatisation. In light of these developments, the issue of strike was taken up on the Tehsil premises and during a meeting, a decision was taken to withdraw the strike. Regular working will resume on Thursday," he said.
Lawyers in Agra and nearby districts were up in arms against orders issued by inspector general (registration) on June 4 to assistant inspector general all over the state to ensure due publicity of e-registration modules in their respective districts.
The registration of documents including sale deeds, power of attorney, agreements etc are being undertaken online in Uttar Pradesh through Prerna Software.
A provision was introduced for a new module wherein the facility of registration could be undertaken by authorised institutions through e-registration. The parties signing the documents were required to be present at the offices of concerned departments with an authority authorised, and for this separate login will be made available. This will be facilitated through biometric equipment, digital identity and digital signatures and registration fees for certain documents specified will be paid online.
These documents, after verification, were to be forwarded to sub registrar office where compliance required will be undertaken digitally and the registered document will remain secured on departmental portal and shall be legally valid.
While the state government had claimed the step as simplification of the registration process through introduction of e-registration in the interest of common people, lawyers opposed it and blamed the state for bringing in privatisation through the back door....
