LUCKNOW, Sept. 21 -- A lawyer allegedly robbed a Rajasthan man of Rs.41 lakh after befriending him while helping secure bail for his younger brother, who is lodged in Varanasi district jail, police said on Sunday. The accused, Abhinav Singh alias Chandan Chand, 29, was arrested within hours of the case being registered, with Rs.35 lakh of the stolen cash and the victim's belongings recovered. His alleged accomplice, Updesh Pathak, is absconding. The victim, Jaipal Sharma, 25, of Bikaner, had contacted Singh for assistance in the bail proceedings. After the formalities were completed at the Varanasi sessions court on September 5, Sharma told Singh he needed to visit Jaunpur to collect money from acquaintances. Singh allegedly drove him there in his WagonR. Sharma collected Rs.22 lakh from one jeweller and Rs.19 lakh from another and kept the cash in a bag. While returning towards Varanasi, Singh allegedly took a U-turn and, along with Pathak, snatched Sharma's mobile phone. Police said the accused drove him around for nearly 20-30 km before stopping near a toll plaza, where they allegedly snatched the cash-filled bag, pushed him out.htc...
