LUCKNOW, Aug. 12 -- King George's Medical University (KGMU) has removed the head of the ophthalmology department from the additional charge of pro-vice-chancellor (pro-VC) following an inquiry into complaints that patients were being asked to procure lenses and medicines from outside, officials said. The action follows recommendations of a four-member inquiry committee, which examined the complaints. The doctor accused in the matter has already been suspended, while notices have also been issued to staff members, including the operation theatre (OT) in-charge, over alleged lapses, they added. The KGMU administration said accountability was also fixed for shortcomings in departmental supervision and management. To ensure the impartiality of the inquiry and improve the department's functioning, the ophthalmology department head was relieved of the pro-VC responsibility. Dr Anju Agarwal, head of the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at Queen Mary's Hospital, has been appointed as the new pro vice-chancellor.
