LUCKNOW, Oct. 3 -- Nursing students at King George's Medical University (KGMU) called off their indefinite sit-in protest on the fourth day on Friday following talks with the university administration over their demands regarding proper probe into the death of a nursing student. KGMU Dean (Paramedical), Prof KK Singh met the protesters and assured them that a specially constituted inquiry committee was in the final stages of investigating the death, a release shared with the media read. Singh said the committee, of which he is a member, had visited Varanasi to gather information about the student's treatment and death and had also visited her ancestral village in Jaunpur to meet her family. He said the committee was examining the records and facts collected during the inquiry, it stated. Singh also told the students that vice-chancellor, Prof Soniya Nityanand was closely monitoring their concerns, amenities and legitimate demands. The students expressed confidence in the administration and agreed to withdraw the agitation and resume their classes and training from Saturday, it stated further. They subsequently vacated the protest site. A student of the 3rd semester of BSc Nursing at KGMU had developed a fever on September 16. On September 17, her parents took her to Varanasi where her condition reportedly deteriorated and she died on September 19. On September 21, students raised certain demands in connection with the incident and expressed their concerns through agitation. They later called off their sit-in protest after two rounds of talks with vice-chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand. However the students had resumed the protest on September 28, a week after calling it off, alleging that the administration had failed to act on their demands. htc...
