LUCKNOW, Sept. 19 -- King George's Medical University (KGMU) has issued show-cause notices to around 25 employees for allegedly halting work and participating in protests despite the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) being in force. The employees were identified using photographs and video footage recorded during the September 15 agitation by the KGMU Medical College and Associated Hospitals Employees' Council, which was demanding the removal of registrar Archana Gaharwar. The administration said the notices seek explanations from the identified employees regarding their participation in the strike, slogan-shouting and demonstrations. Registrar, Archana Gaharwar said further action would be decided after examining their responses, adding that strict action under the relevant rules would be taken if the explanations were found unsatisfactory. The matter has also been brought to the notice of the additional chief secretary, medical education department. The employees had halted work on September 15 and marched across the KGMU campus raising slogans against the registrar. With ESMA in force, the university administration had arranged on-site photography and videography to identify those participating in the agitation.
