LUCKNOW, May 23 -- Fifteen-year-old Lakshmi Singh, born with a severe bone disorder that left several bones in her body underdeveloped, is defying physical limitations through Kathak at a summer workshop being held at UP Sangeet Natak Akademi in Gomti Nagar. Lakshmi's mother, Pushpa Singh, said doctors had predicted that her daughter would survive only for a few days after birth. "Even basic movement seemed impossible, but her determination proved stronger than medical expectations," she said. After years of medicines, physiotherapy and pain, Lakshmi's family decided to encourage her interest in dance. For the past two years, she has been training under Kathak guru Manju Malkani and is now participating in the workshop. Malkani said, "She has an extraordinary grasping power and quickly understands expressions and dance postures. Since footwork is difficult for her, we make special arrangements so she can learn comfortably.
