LUCKNOW, Oct. 27 -- It was the spinners' day out for former champions Uttar Pradesh against Karnataka in their four-day Elite Group D encounter of the Under-23 Col CK Nayudu Trophy on Sunday as they helped the side restrict the visitors for 235 in their first innings. In fact, both left arm orthodox spinners Kartik Yadav (4/40) and Shubham Mishra (3/65) continued their good run in the second match of the season too after Karnataka chose to bat first after winning the toss, at the Victoria Park Ground in Meerut. First, Mishra removed two top order batters Prakar Chaturvedi (21, 35b, 3x4) and Harshil Dharmani (5, 11b, 1x4) in quick succession and left the rivals struggling at 45/2 and then former India Under-19 World Cupper pacer Naman Tiwari sent back both Kartikeya KP (31, 43b, 5x4) and skipper Aneeshwar Gautam (0) on consecutive deliveries to leave the scoreboard reading 99/4. Mishra came back strongly after the lunch break and this time removed opener Jasper EJ (38, 80b, 4x4) by trapping him in front of the wicket. Before other pacer Vijay Kumar could get keeper-batter Sanjay Ashwin (4) caught by Sameer Rizvi in the slips, Yadav ripped through the Karnataka batting, getting the wickets of Samit Dravid (21, 55b, 3x4), Shashi Kumar K (28, 56b, 1x4, 2x6), Dhruv Prabhakar (21, 61b, 2x4) and Dhanush Gowda (1). In fact, a 61-run ninth wicket partnership between Shashi Kumar and Hardik Raj guided Karnataka cross the 200-run mark. Raj remained unbeaten on 54, which came off 83 balls with the help of six boundaries and two sixes. In reply, Uttar Pradesh were sitting pretty at 53/0 in 12 overs in their first innings. Mohd Aashiyan (25, 40b, 4x4) and Swastik Chikara (21, 34b, 4x4) were at the crease at the draw of stumps. Uttar Pradesh will now be needing 182 runs to take the first innings lead when the second day's play starts on Monday. Slow bowlers helped spirited Uttar Pradesh off to a fine start in their Elite Group B encounter of the Women's Under-19 T20 Trophy on Sunday as they defeated hosts Madhya Pradesh by 47 runs, at the Sector 10 BSP cricket Stadium Bhilai. Janvi Baliyan took 3/10, whereas Bharti Singh (2/14) and Chandani Sharma (2/18) shared four wickets between them as Madhya Pradesh could score 81/9 in stipulated 19 overs while chasing Uttar Pradesh's total of 128/6. Supriya Arela took 1/29. Skipper Anaadi Tagde scored the highest 21, which came off 19 balls with the help of two boundaries for Madhya Pradesh. Earlier, Uttar Pradesh after having a reasonably good start managed 128/6 after being sent to bat first. Openers Riya Bhati (22, 21b, 3x4) and Nisha Verma (10, 14b, 1x4) added 37 runs for the first wicket. But thereafter, the wickets started falling on regular intervals.
