LUCKNOW, Oct. 20 -- Following his expertise in organising major cricket events, including international matches at Kanpur's Green Park Stadium in recent years, Sanjay Kapoor, chairman of the Kanpur Cricket Association (KCA), is all set to take charge of the UPT20 League. An official announcement is expected during the annual general meeting of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) in Kanpur on October 30. Kapoor will replace former DGP and league chairman DS Chauhan. His nomination was proposed and seconded by UPCA's former secretary Yudhveer Singh and BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla, respectively, at the conclusion of nominations for the UPCA governing council on Saturday. Ghazipur Cricket Association secretary Sanjeev Singh has also been nominated as the second member of the governing council, according to the official list of candidates issued by UPCA. "Kapoor's induction as chairman of the UPT20 League was very much expected this time as the man has special ability to conduct matches of all standards in Kanpur. It was Kapoor who took the initiative to conduct UP's first-ever district premier league in Kanpur in a grand manner and many felt it a replica of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) where fans thronged like anything," a senior UPCA functionary said on condition of anonymity. "Undoubtedly, the UPT20 League has been conducted by Chauhan and Co in a grand manner over the last three editions, and we are sure that UPCA's premier event will touch new heights under the guidance of Kapoor, who has always been devoted to cricket in UP," he added. After conducting the India-Bangladesh Test successfully even in a difficult situation, Kapoor went on to conduct the Kanpur Premier League and recently a three-match one day series between India A and Australia A. Beyond cricket, he served as president of the All-India Chess Federation for three years, organising the Chess Olympiad in a record four months and a torch relay across 75 cities culminating in Mahabalipuram. All other nominated members in the UPCA electoral process have also been elected unopposed, including Nidhipati Singhani (president), Rakesh Mishra (vice-president), Prem Manohar Gupta (secretary), Omer Mustafa Hasan (joint secretary), Sachin Anand Shukla (treasurer), Karanpal Singh, Lash Raj Tyagi, Lateef Ur Rehman, Manish Chauhan, Said Uddin, Saksham Mishra, Siddharth Prasad, Siddharth Singh, Sunil Joshan, Surendra Pal Singh, and Umair Ahmad. Almost all the nominated members are life members of the UPCA, except Rakesh Mishra, who is the president of Ghaziabad Cricket Association.
