Haridwar, Aug. 3 -- Police have begun turning back vehicle-borne Kanwars (bamboo poles with water containers) that exceed the permissible height limit of 13 feet at entry points along the Uttarakhand-Uttar Pradesh border during the ongoing Shravan Kanwar Mela. Police said that before the commencement of the annual pilgrimage on July 30, the administration had announced that Kanwars exceeding the prescribed height limit would not be allowed to enter the state. Security personnel, along with Central Paramilitary Forces (CPMF), have been deployed at border checkpoints to strictly enforce the directive. According to the administration, teams stationed at the border are inspecting vehicle-borne Kanwars to ensure compliance with safety norms. On Sunday, 12 decorated Kanwars exceeding the permissible height limit were turned back from the Narsan border checkpoint connecting Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. "We are quite clear in this regard that decorated Kanwars should remain within the permissible height limits of 13 feet. The restrictions are necessary for the safety of both Kanwariyas and passers-by and also for the proper management of traffic and the pilgrimage. On Sunday, 12 vehicle-borne Kanwars that were above the permissible height were sent back from the Narsan border," Haridwar senior superintendent of police Navneet Singh Bhullar said. The move aims to prevent accidents involving overhead power transmission lines, as oversized Kanwars risk contacting wires and causing electrocution. The restrictions have also been imposed to ensure smooth movement of traffic. Udasin Akhada Mahamandaleshwar Hari Chetnanand Maharaj of Hari Seva Ashram said: "...devotion, compassion and simplicity are the true essence of Sanatan Dharma. We appeal to Kanwariyas to follow traditions and comply with the guidelines issued by the authorities for the smooth conduct of the Kanwar Mela," he said....
