Kannauj: Students protest over scholarship delay
KANPUR, Aug. 21 -- Hundreds of students of the Government Engineering College in Kannauj's Tirwa staged a protest on Thursday, alleging that their scholarships had not been paid for the past five months and demanding a written assurance on the release of the pending funds, officials said.
Around 710 students are enrolled at the college.
On being informed about the protest, joint magistrate Vaishali, Tirwa circle officer Kulveer Singh and Tehsildar Avneesh Kumar reached the college with police personnel.
After discussions, the students ended their agitation following an assurance that the pending scholarship amount would be released at the earliest.
Students of a composite school in Gugrapur, Kannauj, boycotted classes and protested at the main gate on Thursday, alleging irregularities and misconduct by the in-charge headmaster. They demanded that district officials, including the district magistrate, visit the school and take action.
Parents and villagers alleged that students were made to sweep and mop the school and perform other work.
Meanwhile, the district inspector of schools (DIOS) visited the school, spoke to the students and assured them that their grievances would be addressed. The protest ended following the assurance. htc...
