Jr doc, MBBS student drown in Rapti; two others survive
Gorakhpur, April 22 -- A junior resident and a second-year MBBS student from Madhav Prasad Tripathi Medical College, Siddharthnagar-lost their lives after drowning in the Budhi Rapti River on Monday evening. Their bodies were recovered late at night following an hours-long rescue operation, police said on Tuesday.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 6 PM when four medical trainees visited Yogmaya Mandir under the Jogiya police station limits and decided to bathe in the river.
While two of them managed to return safely, the other two ventured into deeper waters and lost their balance due to the strong current.
Prashant Kumar, additional SP, Siddharthnagar, identified the deceased as Satyam Nayak, 28, a junior resident doctor from Basti, and Sachin Mahawar, 23, a second-year MBBS student from Rajasthan. He stated that the two reportedly attempted to rescue each other after getting into difficulty, which led to both drowning.
Shubendu Singh, circle officer, said that a police team rushed to the spot immediately after being alerted by their companions, Vineet, 23, and Nitesh, 22. Local divers were engaged in the rescue operation.
After nearly four hours of search efforts, both victims were pulled out of the river but were declared dead at a nearby community health centre.
Abhay Singh, station house officer (SHO), Jogiya, said that prima facie, the incident appears to be an accidental drowning during bathing. The bodies have been sent for a post-mortem examination, and the victims' families have been informed. Their relatives are expected to arrive by Tuesday evening.
The tragedy has an additional distressing aspect, as classmates revealed that Sachin Mahawar's father, an auto-rickshaw driver in Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan, is facing financial difficulties in arranging travel to bring his son's body home....
