Lucknow, July 30 -- What was reported as a daylight jewellery theft at a house in Vrindavan Yojana took an unexpected turn after police recovered a bag containing most of the missing ornaments from beneath a bed inside the house, prompting investigators to describe the case as prima facie suspicious. The incident was reported around 4 pm on Wednesday from Sector 1B under the PGI police station limits. "Complainant Jyoti Mishra alias Payal told police that she was resting in one room around 1.30 pm while another room was locked. She claimed she heard noises from the locked room and, on entering, found two unidentified men escaping with a bag containing jewellery," read a police statement. "However, the complainant's version began to unravel during the spot inspection. Police found the room's lock intact, with no signs of tampering or forced entry," it added. The account also failed to find support from the only other person present at the house. Tenant Anamika Shukla told investigators she neither saw nor heard anyone entering or leaving the premises. "During a search of the room, police recovered a bag containing most of the gold and silver ornaments from beneath a bed. The complainant identified the jewellery as hers but claimed that some valuables were still missing," said ADCP South Vasanath Rallapalli. Senior police officers inspected the scene and directed investigators to examine all possible angles. Police said the sequence of events, the intact lock, the recovery of the jewellery from inside the room and the available statements made the case appear suspicious at first glance. Investigator are questioning residents, verifying the claim of missing valuables and collecting evidence. Chowk police on Wednesday arrested a second accused in an alleged Rs.25 crore gold embezzlement case involving 18.531 kg of 22-carat jewellery. The accused, Ram Ashish Gupta (45), a resident of Yahiyaganj, was arrested from the Chowk area. Police said the case was registered in December 2024 on a complaint alleging the misappropriation of 18,531.1 grams of gold jewellery in connivance with retail and wholesale traders. The main accused, former branch head of the gold loan firm Kamal Singh, was arrested three months ago. Police alleged he siphoned off small quantities of pledged gold over several years.
