LUCKNOW, April 3 -- A major fire broke out at a three-storey house of a jeweller in Lucknow's Sarojini Nagar area in the early hours of Thursday, triggering panic and a dramatic rescue operation in which six people, including a child, were saved. A young female domestic help sustained injuries after jumping from the second floor to escape the blaze. "The incident occurred around 3.30am near Parth Republic Apartment in Daroga Khera, where Ajay Rastogi (49) lives with his family," said Lucknow police in a statement. According to officials, the fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit in the kitchen located on the third floor of the house. Police said the family, which includes his wife Anita Verma (48), son Vinayak (16), married daughter Sheetal Verma (30), six-year-old granddaughter Viranika, and domestic help Tannu (22), was asleep on the second floor when the fire broke out. They were alerted only after neighbours raised an alarm. "By the time we realised, flames had already spread. When I opened the door, a fireball rushed out," Rastogi said, adding that he later confirmed through CCTV footage that the blaze had started on the top floor. In panic, Tannu jumped from the second floor and sustained injuries. "She was rushed to a community health centre in Sarojini Nagar, where she is undergoing treatment," the police statement added. Fire brigade teams from Sarojini Nagar and Alambagh reached the spot promptly with three fire tenders. Using ladders mounted on the fire engines, firefighters rescued five family members, including the child, from the building. The family's pet dog was also safely evacuated. Fire station officer Dharampal Singh said timely response and coordination helped avert a major tragedy. "Had there been any delay, the situation could have turned far more serious," he said. While all occupants survived, the fire caused extensive damage to the property. Rastogi estimated the loss at around Rs.1.75 crore, with the lift, air conditioners and household items gutted in the blaze. Police said further assessment of the damage and cause is underway....
