Japan to hike tourist visa fees for some by 400%
New Delhi, June 24 -- Japan plans to raise the tourist visa fees of some countries by more than 400% in July. The fees will apply to over 100 countries, including India, China and Vietnam, which were among Japan's largest sources of visitors last year, the New York Times reported.
They will go from paying $18 to $93 for a single-entry visa, and from $37 to $186 for multiple entries.
The Japanese government said the changes were necessary after 48 years, and also because of inflation and changes in exchange rates. The government of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has taken a series of steps to more tightly regulate immigration and entry of foreign nationals.
A recent visa rule change forced many foreign restaurant owners to shut down the small eateries serving Indian or Vietnamese cuisine that they had set up around Japan.
Takaichi was elected in February with a sweeping mandate for her platform of a hard-line stance on immigration and other issues such as China's growing economic and military threat....
