LUCKNOW, Sept. 20 -- A complaint over insects and hair allegedly found in food at Lucknow University's (LU) Kailash Hostel mess escalated into a protest on Saturday. Hostel inmates gheraoed the vice-chancellor's office after alleging that university officials did not address their concerns. In a written complaint to the chief provost, the hostellers alleged that insects and hair were found in food almost every day. They also alleged that utensils were not washed properly, food was served on used and unclean plates, and garbage had been piling up in the kitchen premises for days. The hostellers said they first approached dean student welfare Prof Amita Kanaujia but alleged that she scolded them and did not hear their complaints. They then gheraoed the VC office. On receiving information, chief proctor Prof Rakesh Dwivedi, chief provost Prof Ashish Awasthi and Prof O P Shukla reached the spot and facilitated a meeting between the students and the vice-chancellor. "Even after charging Rs 40,000, such food with insects and filth is being served. The concerns of students should be heard seriously and action should be taken against those responsible, or we will be forced to launch an agitation," Abhishek Srivastava said. Reacting to the protest, university spokesperson Prof Mukul Srivastava said action was being taken in the matter. "The university is taking action, students are our topmost priority," he said.htc...
