Bhubaneswar/Ranchi/Hyderabad/New Delhi/siliguri, Sept. 26 -- Incessant rain induced by a deep depression generated over the Bay of Bengal has battered parts of Jharkhand, West Bengal, along with other eastern regions, inundating low-lying areas, swelling rivers and causing landslides, with one person dead in a rain-related incident. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) statement on September 25, following a landfall on September 23, the deep depression weakened further into a standard depression as it travelled inland. The weakening deep depression brought torrential rain, landslides and strong winds to parts of Odisha, disrupting road and rail links as officials shut schools in eight districts and evacuated thousands of people from vulnerable areas, officials said, adding that the state has received the highest monsoon rainfall in the last 20 years. Rayagada was among the worst-affected districts, with heavy rain and strong winds uprooting trees and triggering landslides that affected rail and road traffic. Rail services were hit by landslides and falling rocks along Koraput-Rayagada railway line. A landslide near Tunnel No. 3 between Leliguma and Rauli stations buried part of the track under debris, disrupting services for three hours. In Rasoniganda village, 31 people were cut off after the Harabhangi river rose rapidly, cutting off the road connection with Paniganda. As the depression crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast early on Thursday, IMD said very heavy rains continued to lash Eluru, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Srikakulam, Parvathipuram Manyam and Vizianagaram districts till Friday morning, while Anakapalli, Guntur, East Godavari, NTR, Kakinada, Krishna, West Godavari and Palnadu districts received heavy rains. Chintalapudi in Eluru district received the highest rainfall of 162.4 mm on Friday, followed by 143.2 mm at Chintapalli in Alluri Sitarama Raju district, 136.2 mm at Polavaram in Eluru district, and 132.8 mm at Ichchapuram in Srikakulam district. Heavy rains coupled with a substantial inflow of floodwater from neighbouring Odisha, have caused the Vamsadhara, Nagavali and Bahuda rivers to swell in Srikakulam district. A rain-related death was reported in Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district, where a 40-year-old farmer drowned after falling into a flooded drain while trying to catch fish in a partially submerged field, officials said. The Raipur, Bastar and Durg divisions witnessed some of the worst impact, with overflowing streams inundating roads and residential areas, officials said. In Jharkhand, children had a narrow escape after a large tree fell on a school bus in Ranchi. At least five flights were cancelled till 2 pm at Birsa Munda Airport due to the inclement weather. In West Bengal, very heavy rain triggered landslides near a rural hospital in Darjeeling district, injuring a person, an official said. Similar incidents have been reported from other parts as the district received 153 mm of rainfall over 24 hours till 8.30 am on Friday, the highest in the state, according to IMD data.
