Imran Khan apologises, vows to stay away from protests
India, Nov. 4 -- A
ctor Imran Khan has tendered an unconditional apology before the Bombay High Court and promised not to participate in protests in future, securing interim relief against a 'Leave India' order issued to him. The actor, a US citizen holding an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, had received the notice over his alleged participation in a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Mumbai on October 10.
The youth-led demonstration, held near August Kranti Maidan, had demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls.
According to reports, Khan, represented by senior advocate Venkatesh Dhond, told the court, "I am volunteering to give the present undertaking that there will be no participation by me in any protests in the future." He also pledged not to "join or indirectly influence others to protest in future".
During Monday's hearing, the court observed that OCI cardholders are "at the mercy of the country and cannot live here and criticise" it. "If you were an Indian citizen, it would have been okay but you're an OCI holder," the bench said, adding, "You can't act like an Indian citizen."
In his undertaking, Khan, who has lived in India for 42 years, said he has "utmost love" for the country and that his "life, profession and affiliation are all confined to this great nation". The court granted him interim protection from the order until December 7, when the matter will be heard again.
