Mussoorie, June 10 -- Several of the state's hill districts logged light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over the past 24 hours, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert in six districts on June 11 and 12. According to the IMD, a dry spell is likely to prevail across most parts of the state over Tuesday and Wednesday. However, isolated parts of Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Pithoragarh and Champawat districts are expected to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hail and gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 kmph. Among manual weather stations, Keertinagar recorded the highest rainfall at 40 mm during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Tuesday. Lohaghat received 27.3 mm rainfall manually and registered a peak of 41 mm through Automatic Weather Stations (AWS). Light showers were also reported from Champawat, Ganganagar, Rudraprayag and Pauri, while Srinagar, Berinag, Almora and Chamoli recorded lighter spells. Thunderstorm activity was reported from Pithoragarh and Sersi.. Strong winds lashed many areas, with Champawat recording the highest wind speed of 76 kmph. Other places, including Ranichawri, Chamoli, Kosiyakutoli, Jolly Grant, Bharsar, Mukteshwar and Pantnagar, experienced winds ranging from 30 kmph to 37 kmph. The dry spell will prevail for the next two days, but an orange alert has been issued for June 11 and 12 with forecasts of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hail and gusty winds at isolated places in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Pithoragarh and Champawat districts, said IMD officials Despite isolated spells of rain, the state recorded only 1.9 mm rainfall against the seasonal sub-divisional normal of 5.9 mm, resulting in a rainfall deficit of 67%. Major districts including Dehradun, Haridwar, Chamoli and Udham Singh Nagar remained dry during the period. Champawat recorded 11.6 mm rainfall, which was 182% above its regional normal, while Rudraprayag received 10 mm rainfall against its normal of 6.6 mm. Meanwhile, Pantnagar remained the hottest place in the state with a maximum temperature of 39.9 degrees Celsius, 3.3 degrees above normal.
