IGIMS suspends 3 students for 3 months over alleged ragging
PATNA, Oct. 10 -- The Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) has suspended three MBBS students of the 2024 batch for three months over an alleged ragging case, days after a first-year student accused seniors of harassing freshers and imposing a coercive dress code, officials said.
An order issued by the principal's office on Thursday identified the students as Aditya Raj, Abhinav Raj and Raj Chaurasiya. The suspension, effective immediately, bars them from attending classes or using academic facilities. They have also been directed to vacate their hostel rooms and stay off the campus during the suspension period.
The institute's anti-ragging committee (ARC) will review the case after three months and decide the next course of action under the rules of the Supreme Court, the University Grants Commission (UGC), the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the institute. The suspension order does not specify the allegations or state whether it followed the latest complaint.
In an email sent to the UGC's anti-ragging helpline late on October 5, a first-year MBBS student of the 2026 batch alleged that seniors, mostly from the 2024 batch, had been harassing freshers since classes began. The email was also marked to the IGIMS director, dean and principal.
The complaint alleged that seniors used abusive language and forced juniors to follow a prescribed dress code, including buying clothes from a specific shop. It named Aditya Raj and Abhinav Raj among those allegedly involved and claimed the harassment continued despite an earlier order from the principal's office.
The student further alleged that seven or eight seniors locked juniors inside the gym on October 3 and forced them to perform squatting exercises as punishment. On October 5, two seniors allegedly confronted freshers in lecture theatre LT-1 during the lunch break, abused them, made them bend at 90 degrees while greeting seniors and forced two students into a semi-squat position. They also allegedly warned the juniors to shave their heads.
The complainant said CCTV footage of the lecture theatre could corroborate the account. The email also included a document allegedly circulated by seniors as a "rulebook", threatening a boycott of students who failed to comply. Freshers were allegedly warned that they could be barred from the library, cafeteria and campus after classes.
In August, the institute also suspended six MBBS students over alleged question-paper leakage and tampering with answer sheets in the second-professional examination held in December 2025....
