Holi colours as cover, 5 rob elderly couple, arrested
AGRA, March 6 -- Five men allegedly used the festive cover of Holi to rob a grieving elderly couple in Aligarh's Delhi Gate area on Wednesday, walking into their home with coloured faces and festive clothes, only to hold them hostage and flee with gold bangles, cash and mobile phones. Aligarh police arrested all five within 24 hours.
Neeraj Kumar Jadaun, senior superintendent of police, Aligarh, told mediapersons at a press conference on Thursday that the robbery took place around 1 pm on Wednesday when the city was in full Holi celebration mode. The victims, Vinod Kumar Varshney and his wife Suman Varshney, were living alone in the house, having recently lost their son. Four of the five accused, their faces smeared with Holi colours and dressed in festive clothes, entered the house on the pretext of playing Holi. They allegedly took the couple hostage and made off with a pair of gold bangles, Rs 10,000 in cash and two mobile phones.
The couple initially mistook them for Holi revellers. According to Jadaun, the accused greeted them with "Happy Holi" before turning aggressive and assaulting the couple. Suman Varshney allegedly bit one of the accused while resisting them, prompting the group to flee earlier than planned. Jadaun said the incident was taken as a challenge by the police, as it occurred in broad daylight when heavy security was deployed across the city for Holi. Special teams were formed with a deadline to crack the case before the police's own Holi celebration on Thursday.
The five arrested were identified as Arif, Nadeem, Bhura alias Nizamuddin, Hasim and Pappu. Among them, Bhura alias Nizamuddin allegedly had prior access to the Varshney household through scrap business dealings and knew the elderly couple lived alone.
Police recovered both gold bangles, Rs 7,500 in cash and the mobile phones from the accused. The police team that cracked the case has been awarded a cash reward of Rs 25,000 and will receive appreciation letters....
