Meerut, Aug. 30 -- The Meerut region received heavy monsoon rain on Friday, bringing both relief from the sweltering humidity and chaos due to severe waterlogging. Within just one and a half hours, the city recorded 55 millimeters of rainfall. August alone has logged nearly 175 mm so far, surpassing figures of the past several years. As the downpour continued, visibility on the Delhi-Dehradun Highway dropped, forcing motorists to switch on their headlights. With July already receiving good showers, the rainfall tally for August now stands close to 175 mm. Meteorologist M Shameem from the Indian Institute of Farming Systems Research, Modipuram, said the spell would prove beneficial for crops. "This rain will help ease the heat and also support paddy and sugarcane crops," he noted....
