VARANASI, Aug. 26 -- Heavy rains, which started in Varanasi on Monday evening, continued overnight, leading to waterlogging in various localities of the city. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), 123.6mm rain was recorded in Varanasi. Apart from different localities that experienced waterlogging, people faced a lot of inconvenience at the BHU campus as its main gate was waterlogged and the visitors waded through knee deep water to reach Sir Sundar Lal Hospital. The paths connecting the OPD to the emergency ward, as well as near the blood testing, registration, and medicine counters were under knee-deep water.Every day, around 6,000 patients from states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand arrive here seeking treatment. Meanwhile, a gate at the Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) complex had been closed due to waterlogging, disrupting movement. In view of the red alert sounded by the IMD with the possibility of heavy rainfall in the district and surrounding areas, the district magistrate declared a holiday on August 25 in all schools from classes 1 to 8. This order was applied equally to all schools from class 1 to 8, run by Basic Shiksha Parishad, recognised, aided and other boards, said basic shiksha adhikari Bhupendra Singh. Continuous rains proved fatal for an elderly couple who were killed when an old wall of a house collapsed in Chandpur locality under Manduadih police station area early Tuesday morning. The couple was sleeping on a cart near the house and were buried under the debris, police said. The deceased were identified as Ravindra Nath Mishra (60) and his wife Pratima Mishra (55), both natives of Dumaria, Garhwa, Jharkhand. They were working at a company in Chandpur. Locals said Pratima Mishra had arrived from the village in July. Overnight rains caused trees to fall on 11 major city routes, disrupting traffic. The municipal corporation teams cleared paths by cutting down fallen trees at locations including Sundarpur, Suswahi, near the Parliamentary Office, near Adampur Police Outpost, Adampur Ward, two spots near Lakshmi Mandir (Ashok Vihar Colony), and three spots between Ashapur and Haveliya Crossing....
