Health hazard: Overhead water tank was last cleaned in 2021
LUCKNOW, April 9 -- The 800-kilolitre capacity overhead water tank in Rajajipuram Sector E, with an exposed broken roof, was last cleaned in 2021. The decades-old structure, which serves as one of the primary water sources for the locality, continues to supply contaminated water to around 3,000-4,000 households.
A Jalkal official said standard practice mandates cleaning every six months to one year. Authorities, however, failed to follow the procedure.
The open roof of the tank allows direct entry of dust, debris, rainwater and even birds, raising public health concerns. On April 8, Hindustan Times highlighted the damaged tank roof in the area.
Kunwar Jyoti Prasad Ward corporator Gauri Sawariya revealed that there are four overhead tanks in this ward, out of which two are already defunct, one has a broken roof and only the fourth is in proper working condition. Residents for long had been complaining to the corporator that they were recieving contaminated water.
Jal Nigam superintendent engineer Sameen Akhtar, who also holds additional charge of chief engineer, said departments should clean overhead tanks at least once a year. htc...
