HC orders CBI probe into Rs.6-crore Basic Education scam
Lucknow, May 31 -- The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has ordered a CBI probe into the alleged embezzlement of more than Rs.6 crore in the Basic Education Department and stayed recovery proceedings initiated in the case.
The order was passed by Justice Rajeev Singh while hearing a petition filed by teacher Shravan Kumar Dwivedi. The court observed that once an FIR has been registered, the alleged embezzled amount cannot be recovered as land revenue and must be dealt with according to legal procedure. During the hearing, it was submitted that government funds were allegedly transferred to various accounts through collusion involving officials of the Basic Education Department's finance and accounts wing and the treasury. An FIR was subsequently registered and an investigation launched. The court directed the Joint Director of the CBI, Lucknow, to take over further investigation of the FIR and submit a status report by the next hearing on August 10.
