Bengaluru, Sept. 3 -- The Madras high court on Wednesday directed the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government to file status reports on the steps taken to trace 85 people from the southern state who remain "unreachable" following devastating flash floods in Nepal. A bench of chief justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and justice G Arul Murugan passed the order on a public interest litigation filed by advocate AF Parvesh Mushraf, seeking directions to authorities to establish whereabouts of pilgrims from TN affected by the disaster in the Himalayan nation and ensure their rescue and safe return. Former Madras HC judge Justice V Sivagnanam is among the TN pilgrims reported to be untraceable since devastating flash floods ravaged Nepal on August 26. The state government told the HC that "305 people from TN had travelled to Nepal, most of them for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Of these, 220 were traced and confirmed safe, while 85 remained unreachable." The state added that it had taken all possible steps, in coordination with the Centre and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, to locate those missing. The bench directed the state to place on record a formal status report setting out steps taken so far and rescue operations under way. Centre was also permitted to file its response.
