Govt reply today on plea challenging extension of gram pradhans' tenure
LUCKNOW, June 3 -- The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court on Tuesday granted the Uttar Pradesh government one day's time to file its response to a petition challenging the extension of the tenure of existing gram pradhans (village heads) by six months.
A division bench of Justice Shekhar B Saraf and Justice Abdhesh Kumar Chaudhary was hearing a petition filed by Om Prakash Prajapati against the state government's decision to extend the tenure of gram panchayats beyond their five-year term. The bench listed the matter for further hearing on Wednesday.
Chief standing counsel Atul Kumar Dubey sought time to file the state's response, which was allowed by the court. Advocate Amrendra Nath Tripathi appeared on behalf of the petitioner.
The state government on May 26 extended the tenure of gram panchayats by six months after the expiry of their five-year term.
The delay in holding panchayat elections follows the state's decision to constitute an Other Backward Classes (OBC) commission to examine reservation in Panchayati Raj institutions. The commission has been given six months to submit its report on OBC reservation....
