LUCKNOW, Aug. 15 -- The UP government has released Rs.514.54 crore as the first instalment for the construction of five new district jails in Kanpur Nagar, Moradabad, Auraiya, Bhadohi and Lalitpur, adding 6,212 inmates to the state's prison capacity. The five projects, estimated to cost Rs.1,470.10 crore, will receive the first instalment equivalent to 35% of their combined project cost to facilitate the start of construction. The expansion comes as Uttar Pradesh's existing prison infrastructure remains under pressure. The state has 75 operational jails, including seven central prisons, with a sanctioned capacity of 77,588 inmates. As many as 80,854 prisoners were lodged in these facilities as on August 1, putting the prison population more than 3,200 above the sanctioned capacity. The Kanpur Nagar district jail will be the largest of the five proposed facilities, with accommodation for 2,030 inmates.
