Govt convenes special assembly session on April 28
Dehradun, April 23 -- The state government has convened a one-day assembly session on April 28, during which it is likely to move a censure motion against the defeat of the 131st Constitution Amendment Bill, officials said. The Bill had proposed raising the Lok Sabha strength to 850 and implementing 33% reservation for women in time for the 2029 general elections.
No legislative business can be taken up during the special session, according to an official communication seen by HT.
Meanwhile, Congress has demanded that the state government reserve 33% seats for women in the 70-member Uttarakhand assembly.
"If the government is serious about women's empowerment, it should provide reservation for women in the state Assembly," said Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee president Ganesh Godiyal. The party is also set to stage a protest outside the Assembly in Dehradun on Thursday for women's reservation in the state legislature.
Suryakant Dhasmana, Uttarakhand Congress vice-president, said the party will also organise outreach programmes at the block level across all 13 districts to "unmask the intentions of the BJP." "Our objective is to expose the misinformation being spread by the BJP and highlight the hypocrisy of the state government on women's reservation," he said.

Discussions will cover measures from the time of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, including reservation in panchayats and local bodies, to subsequent efforts by Congress governments, as well as the party's role in the passage of the Women's Reservation Bill in 2023," he added. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), however, termed the Congress protest an attempt to divert public attention. BJP state media in charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said, "Those who obstructed the path of women's reservation in Parliament are now trying to mislead people in the states. The public is aware and will respond accordingly.
"The Congress protest is baseless and aimed at salvaging its lost credibility on women's issues," he added....
