Going backless? Here's how to pull it off
India, Nov. 1 -- Strap: From finding the right innerwear and choosing a hairstyle that shows off your back to getting a smooth, glowing finish, here's how to wear backless dresses with confidence this festive and wedding season.
BOX 1- Get the support right
A backless dress may be all about the design, but finding the right innerwear is just as important.
Stick-on bras: Silicone adhesive bras or stick-on cups work well with fully backless outfits. Apply them on clean, dry skin, without any lotion or oil, to ensure they stay in place.
Body tape: For deeper cuts or when you need extra lift and support, body-shaping tape is a good alternative. Use nipple pasties to protect sensitive areas before applying the tape.
Low-back converters: If your blouse has a mid-to-low back rather than a completely exposed one, try a low-back bra converter or a bra with transparent straps.
Fashion tape: Double-sided fashion tape along the edges of deep necklines and side openings can help prevent the fabric from gaping or slipping.
Pro tip: Humidity and excessive sweating can affect the adhesive on bras and body tape. When removing tape, avoid pulling it off dry. Use body oil or petroleum jelly to loosen the adhesive gently, or remove it under warm water in the shower.
BOX 2 - Nail the hairstyle
Makeup artist Amita Juneja recommends three styles to try:
The high ponytail: A sleek, high ponytail is a fuss-free way to show off the back while adding a contemporary touch to your look.
The low bun: A snatched low bun lends a polished, elegant finish and works particularly well with traditional blouses featuring intricate back detailing.
Hollywood waves: If you prefer wearing your hair open, opt for side-swept Hollywood waves. Sweep the hair over one shoulder to keep the back visible.
How to prep: Start with clean, well-conditioned hair so it is easier to style and manage. Use a heat protectant before curling or straightening, and finish with a light-hold hairspray to keep flyaways in check without making the hairstyle look stiff. If you're going for a sleek bun or ponytail, use styling gel or serum for a smooth finish.
BOX 3 - The art of a glowing back
Richa Agarwal, makeover and beauty expert, recommends:
Prep your skin: Gently exfoliate and moisturise your back a day or two before the occasion to get rid of dead skin and achieve a smoother finish.
Even out the tone: Use a lightweight body foundation or tinted body lotion to even out the skin tone. Add a touch of liquid highlighter to the shoulders and collarbones for a subtle glow. Avoid heavy oils and excessive shimmer, as they can make the skin look greasy under wedding lights and flash photography.
Conceal marks: To cover back acne marks or pigmentation, opt for a transfer-resistant body concealer. Blend well, let it dry completely and test it against white fabric before dressing.
Blend it right: Ensure your face, neck, shoulders and back blend naturally in tone. Test products beforehand to avoid patchiness or makeup stains on delicate fabrics.
