Godiyal asks state Cong unit to join Delhi march
Dehradun, Oct. 12 -- Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UKPCC) president Ganesh Godiyal on Sunday urged all leaders and workers from the state unit to join the INDIA bloc protest march in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh on the alleged 'vote theft' issue on Monday.
"Rahul Gandhi ji has called for a march to the Supreme Court tomorrow to demand electoral reforms, ensure every individual's rights in a democracy and seek justice. I appeal to all Congress workers in Uttarakhand to reach Delhi in large numbers to support this campaign. Workers from the Garhwal region will assemble at the Narsan border at 8 am tomorrow. For workers from the Kumaon region, Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya ji and the respective district presidents will coordinate to decide the meeting point," Godiyal said.
"The location for the gathering in Delhi will be communicated separately. I urge all party workers to reach their designated assembly points on time," added Godiyal.
Meanwhile, the Congress said it would continue protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged large-scale deletion of voters' names during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Jasvinder Singh Gogi, president of the Dehradun Mahanagar Congress Committee, said the protests would continue until Kumar resigned and the alleged irregularities in the revision exercise were addressed.
"The entire country knows that vote chori (theft) is happening. That is why the Modi government and the Election Commission are scared. The way they have been clamping down on protesters shows that they are scared. They know they cannot win elections and are trying to loot," Gogi said.
Meanwhile, the Students' Federation of India (SFI) has also announced a protest against the CEC. Nitin Maletha, president of its state committee, said the demonstration would be held at Gandhi Park in Dehradun and would be open to all those willing to join. BJP state president Mahendra Bhatt hit back at the Congress, asking the party and other opposition groups to introspect over their electoral defeats instead of making what he described as baseless allegations against the Election Commission. Bhatt said the Congress had lost the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections before Gyanesh Kumar assumed charge as the CEC. The party also failed to come to power in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and lost the 2017 and 2022 assembly elections in Uttarakhand, he said.
"The public rejected the Congress in these elections, and the party should accept this political reality. Gyanesh Kumar was neither responsible for these defeats nor did the present chief election commissioner have any role in them," Bhatt said.
He also criticised the opposition's protests against the electoral process and the SIR exercise, alleging that they were aimed at securing political mileage. He said allegations against constitutional institutions should be backed by facts and evidence. Referring to recent election results in Assam, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, Bhatt said the BJP had registered significant victories while the Congress had failed to make gains. He attributed the party's electoral setbacks to a lack of effort by its senior leaders and what he termed negative politics.
The political exchange comes amid allegations by the Uttarakhand Congress that the SIR exercise led to the deletion of eligible voters' names and was conducted in violation of electoral rules. According to the state election commission, more than 826,000 names were removed from Uttarakhand's electoral rolls during the exercise, against a pre-SIR electorate of more than 7.96 million. The final electoral roll listed 7,158,949 voters, including 3,737,701 men, 3,421,036 women and 212 third-gender electors.
Chief Electoral Officer BVRC Purushottam has announced a special drive from October 8 to 20 to identify eligible voters and facilitate their inclusion in the electoral rolls. Purushottam said that booth-level officers (BLOs) would organise special camps at all 12,543 polling stations across the state from October 8 to 10 as part of the pre-SIR and SIR exercise.
"During the camps, BLOs will verify voters included in the ASD (Absent, Shifted and Dead) list and prepare booth-wise lists of eligible voters. From October 12 to 20, BLOs will conduct door-to-door verification and assist eligible voters in filling Form 6 for inclusion of their names in the electoral rolls," he said.
Purushottam added that district officials had been directed to involve booth-level agents of recognised political parties and members of Booth Awareness Groups in the exercise....
