PANAJI, Aug. 27 -- India is among the world's top five economies and would have become the third largest soon had the "recent global crisis" not occurred, but it would certainly reach that milestone too, defence minister Rajnath Singh said on Wednesday. He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the 'Hutatma Smurti Smarak', a memorial dedicated to protesters who were killed in firing by Portuguese border guards on August 15, 1955. Chief minister Pramod Sawant, Union minister Shripad Naik and Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade were also present on the occasion. India is one of the top five economies of the world, Singh said, adding, "Had there been no recent global crisis, today we would have been the third largest economy." India and Indians recognise only one identity - the identity of being Indian, the defence minister said. "What is it that brought Indians together to free Goa from Portuguese control? Patradevi is the best example of Indian unity. Why did they come to free Goa? There was only one identity -- the identity of being Indian," Singh said. Patradevi is a village along the border between Goa and Maharashtra, where around 22 people were killed when they marched into Goa demanding freedom from Portugese control in 1955....
