VARANASI, Dec. 30 -- An altercation broke out between ghat visitors, comprising local residents and domestic tourists, and a group of Japanese tourists at Dashashwamedh Ghat in Varanasi, after the locals allegedly objected to one of the tourists wearing a red Santa Cap. However, the police claimed that it was a misunderstanding that got resolved later. The incident took place on December 25, but came to light after a video clip of the verbal altercation surfaced on social media. According to a police officer, the situation calmed down after the tourist and the locals apologised to each other. No formal complaints were filed from either side. ACP, Dashashwamedh, Atul Anjan Tripathi said, "the police have taken cognisance of the viral video and a police team has been deployed to probe the incident." He added that the video is said to be from December 25, and initial investigation suggested that the altercation occurred due to confusion. "As the matter involved foreign tourists, the police took it more seriously. The viral video is being probed, and further action will be taken on the basis of the findings," he said. The incident took a political turn as SP hit out at the government over the issue. " Vishwa Guru? Achche Din, and Atithi Devo Bhav (World leader, Good days, Guests are like gods)," the party wrote on its official X handle. In response, deputy commissioner of police, Kashi Zone, wrote on X, "In this incident, Japanese tourists were objected to by other visitors regarding their bathing attire. After which the tourists apologised and the dispute was resolved."...
