Ganja smuggling gang busted in Badaun, 2 held
MEERUT, July 21 -- In a major crackdown on inter-state drug trafficking, the special operations group (SOG) in Badaun district busted a large-scale ganja smuggling racket, arresting two smugglers and seizing 75.890 kilograms of ganja reportedly sourced from Odisha. The seized contraband is estimated to be worth nearly Rs.20 lakh in the illegal market. A car used for transportation was also impounded. However, the prime accused managed to escape.
On Sunday, SP City Vijendra Dwivedi informed that the operation was launched following intelligence inputs about a vehicle involved in ganja smuggling. Acting swiftly, joint teams from SOG and Alapur police set up a checkpoint on the Badaun-Hasanpur Huriyai road on Saturday evening. When they signaled a suspicious car to stop, the driver attempted to flee, leading to a brief chase.
Two smugglers, identified as Asapur village resident Alim, and Faridpur village resident Pawan, were apprehended on the spot.
The prime accused has been identified as Mukarram, a resident of Masoodpura village under Usait Police Station. Police suspect the involvement of a larger inter-state network and are intensifying efforts to nab the absconding accused and trace others linked to the Odisha-Uttar Pradesh ganja supply chain....
