LUCKNOW, March 20 -- A death that appeared to be a railway accident has turned out to be part of an elaborate cover-up. Lucknow police have arrested four members of a criminal gang allegedly responsible for concealing a killing that occurred during a failed dacoity in March 2025. "Mohanlalganj police have arrested four members of an organised criminal gang, including its leader, exposing a carefully planned attempt to conceal the death of an accomplice during a failed dacoity in March 2025," Vasanth Rallapalli, additional deputy commissioner of police, South, said on Thursday. The gang allegedly targeted a house in Mohanlalganj, climbing onto its roof late at night to execute a planned robbery. "The plan went awry when a dispute broke out among the members, leading to one of them being accidentally shot. The sound of gunfire alerted residents, forcing the gang to flee with their injured accomplice, who later died due to excessive bleeding," the officer said. Police allege the accused then attempted to destroy evidence. "The body was initially hidden under straw in a field before being placed on railway tracks in Gopal Kheda twice in a bid to mislead investigators," police said. The body was recovered on March 26, 2025, and identified as Sushil Chauhan, a Sitapur resident with multiple criminal cases. The arrested accused, Kamlesh (gang leader), Abhilash alias Abhilakh, Baburam and Ramchandra alias Chhotu, have extensive criminal histories linked to theft, dacoity and Arms Act violations across multiple districts. Police continue efforts to arrest other absconding members....
