LUCKNOW, Aug. 17 -- A horse running amid high-speed traffic on the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway on Sunday raised fresh safety concerns over animal intrusion on the newly opened corridor. The horse reportedly entered the expressway near Unnao and ran for several kilometres, forcing motorists to slow down and manoeuvre around it. An NHAI patrol team chased the animal and, after a 7-8 km pursuit, managed to drive it off the expressway around two kilometres before the Lalganj bypass. No accident was reported. Around 45 km of the greenfield section is protected by six-foot-high mesh fencing and gates to prevent animals from entering. However, horses, cattle and dogs have reportedly been spotted on the expressway despite these safeguards. NHAI officials said some fencing had been damaged and would be repaired soon.
