Four arrested, one injured in shootout with police
Kanpur, May 26 -- The police have arrested four men in connection with the killing of a father and son in an incident of road rage that unfolded on a crowded bypass road on Sunday night.
The main accused was shot in both legs after allegedly opening fire at a police team during a chase on Monday.
Additional police commissioner, law and order, Vipin Tada, said the prime accused, Karan Varma, 24, was injured in an exchange of fire after he tried to evade arrest. He has been admitted to hospital. The other three, Shiv Varma, 19, Utsav Awasthi, 19, and Sameer Gautam, 21, have been sent to jail. Investigators said all four had confessed to the crime during questioning.
The attack, captured in videos circulated locally, took place on the Yashoda Nagar bypass in Naubasta after a motorcycle carrying Shivnarayan Trivedi, 60, and his two sons brushed against an Apache bike ridden by the accused. What began as an argument quickly escalated.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the attackers kicked and punched the three men in the middle of the road before pulling out knives. When passersby tried to intervene, the assailants allegedly threatened and assaulted them as well, using helmets and bricks to keep the crowd away.
Shivnarayan and his son Shivam, 28, died of stab injuries. The second son, Satyam, 30, remains critical.
One of the accused, Shiv Varma, a Blinkit delivery worker, was caught at the scene by local residents, beaten up and handed over to the police. Karan Varma and Utsav Awasthi fled. Police later recovered three motorcycles, a Honda Shine, a TVS Apache and a Bajaj Discover, from the spot. One belonged to the victims and the others to the accused, officers said....
