LUCKNOW, Aug. 1 -- Five officials of the Gorakhpur District Jail have been suspended and a departmental inquiry ordered against them following the escape of an undertrial prisoner from the jail on Friday. According to the prison administration and reform services department, the action was taken on the basis of a preliminary inquiry report received by the director-general, prisons, PC Meena. The officials were found prima facie responsible for lapses that led to the escape of Vipin, son of Harishankar, a resident of Sarsopar under Bansgaon police station in Gorakhpur district, who was lodged in the jail as an undertrial prisoner. Those suspended with immediate effect are Jail Warders Jitendra Kumar Gautam and Jitendra Kumar Dubey, Head Jail Warders Gyan Prakash Srivastava and Ramjeet Singh, and Jailor Arun Kumar. The department has also instituted departmental proceedings against all five officials to determine their individual responsibility for the incident and the alleged security lapses. In addition, departmental action has been recommended against Gorakhpur District Jail superintendent Dilip Kumar Pandey, with the recommendation forwarded to the state government for further necessary action. The escape of the undertrial triggered an immediate administrative response, with the prison authorities examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and fixing responsibility for the security breach. The preliminary inquiry conducted on the directions of the director-general, prisons, found the five suspended officials prima facie negligent in the discharge of their duties.
