Five held for kidnapping, forcibly marrying off 17-year-old girl
VARANASI, July 12 -- Five individuals were arrested on Saturday on charges of abducting a 17-year-old girl from a village in Varanasi and forcing her into marriage with a 20-year-old man from Bulandshahr, police said.
Three of the suspects were arrested from the Gopalpur village, within the jurisdiction of the Chaubepur Police Station in Varanasi, while two others were held in Western Uttar Pradesh. The girl has been rescued and sent for a medical examination.
Deputy commissioner of police (Varuna Zone) Pramod Kumar identified the accused as Shivdhani, 34, Rahul Bhardwaj, 31, and Maina Devi, 42, all residents of Gopalpur Kamauli in Varanasi along with Mohit, 20, a resident of Dharau village in Bulandshahr's Khurja area, and Nem Singh, 34, a resident of Badanpur in Mathura.
According to police, a resident of the Chaubepur area filed a complaint on July 5 alleging that her 17-year-old niece had been kidnapped and sold for Rs.1 lakh. Based on the complaint, a case was registered under Sections 137(2) (kidnapping), 87 (abducting or inducing a woman to compel her marriage), and 143(4) (trafficking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Investigators allege that Shivdhani, Rahul Bhardwaj and Maina Devi orchestrated the kidnapping before forcing the girl to marry Mohit. Mohit's maternal uncle, Nem Singh, was also allegedly involved in the conspiracy.
During interrogation, police learnt that Mohit and his uncle paid the other suspects to facilitate the forced marriage. Further investigation is ongoing, and police stated that additional action will be taken if other individuals are implicated....
