GORAKHPUR, July 17 -- Six members of the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation's (GMC) executive committee were elected unopposed on Thursday, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing five seats and the Samajwadi Party (SP) winning one. The withdrawal of a nomination by a corporator paved the way for all six candidates to be elected unopposed. This became possible after a last-minute understanding between the BJP and the SP to avoid a contest in the BJP-led municipal board. Election officials later handed over certificates to the newly elected members, further strengthening the BJP's position in the corporation's key decision-making body. Mayor Manglesh Srivastava congratulated the members and said the unopposed election reflected the corporators' commitment to the development of their respective wards. He assured that the suggestions and concerns raised by the lone SP member would receive equal importance in the functioning of the civic body. Assistant municipal commissioner Rajan Srivastava said the election process was peaceful and in accordance with the prescribed rules.
