VARANASI, Sept. 29 -- A massive fire broke out at a factory manufacturing fans in the Madauli area under Manduadih police s tation early Monday morning, prompting the evacuation of around 25 nearby houses. Manduadih SHO Digambar Upadhyay said the fire took more than two-and-a-half hours to control. Factory manager Anadishankar Gupta and night guard Santosh Maurya noticed smoke around 4 am and alerted the fire brigade. Several drums containing turpentine, solvents and other inflammable chemicals were stored inside the factory, making firefighting difficult. Officials said a short circuit was suspected to have caused the fire, though the exact cause will be established after an investigation. Fire department officer Vinod Pandey said the narrow access road posed difficulties for fire tenders. They were stationed on GT Road and water was pumped to the factory through hoses. Tankers were refilled at a factory in Chandpur when supplies ran out. The intense heat caused pillars of the two-storey building to tilt. Factory management estimated losses could run into crores, but the exact damage will be assessed after the fire is fully extinguished....
