Farmer killed in big cat attack in Lakhimpur Kheri village
Lakhimpur Kheri, June 15 -- A 60-year-old farmer was killed in a suspected big cat attack near Ramnagar Kalan village under Bhira police station limits on Sunday evening, triggering protests by villagers.
The victim, Ramdin, had gone to his fields near the Sharda river to apply fertiliser when the animal attacked him. Farmers working nearby rushed to his aid and drove away the animal, believed by locals to be a tiger.
However, Ramdin succumbed to his injuries before he could be taken to hospital.
Kirti Chaudhari, deputy director of Dudhwa buffer zone, confirmed Ramdin's death from a big cat's attack, however, she added it was yet to be ascertained if the errant big cat was a leopard or a tiger.
The area lies close to the Majhgain forest range of the Dudhwa buffer zone and the Gola forest range, where movement of both species has been reported.
The incident is the second fatal big cat attack in the area within weeks. On May 4, a 14-year-old boy was killed near the same village.
