Family alleges conspiracy, death due to poisoning
PRAYAGRAJ, Feb. 14 -- The family of the young volleyball player who was found dead in his room at the Amitabh Bachchan Sports Complex (Mayo Hall) hostel on February 10 have alleged conspiracy and accused unknown persons of poisoning him.
The accusations by the family of the deceased Pratyush Rai has now prompted the Colonelganj police to begin a deeper probe into the matter.
Pratyush, 17, son of farmer Avni Rai from Souri village in Ghazipur district, was discovered dead on February 10 morning. His postmortem report indicated the presence of a toxic substance, and the viscera has been preserved for further analysis. Police officials have questioned trainee players, the coach, and the warden, but no concrete clues have surfaced so far.
Pratyush's elder brother, Nitant Rai, had initially filed a complaint on Wednesday seeking an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the death. However, the following day he submitted a second, more serious complaint alleging that his brother had been murdered and that unidentified individuals in the hostel were involved in poisoning him. The young athlete had been staying at the hostel for nearly four years to receive professional volleyball training and was also a Class 12 student at Bal Vidya Bhartiya Inter College.
DCP (City) Manish Shandilya confirmed that the family has accused unknown persons of poisoning Pratyush to kill him. He said the police are examining all angles of the case and added that the mystery would soon be solved once the investigation is completed. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing probe, he said.
According to the family, Pratyush had secured a Havildar's position in the Indian Army through the sports quota, but had not disclosed this achievement to his coach or hostel authorities. On December 16, he left for Army training in Guwahati without prior intimation and was expected to formally join after completing five months of training.
On February 2, Regional Sports Officer Prem Kumar issued a notice to Pratyush based on a written complaint from volleyball coach Veer Singh Yadav, citing his long absence from the hostel without permission as an act of indiscipline.
The notice directed him to appear before the RSO office by February 10, warning that he could face expulsion if he failed to comply.
Copies of the notice were sent to the Sports Directorate and to Pratyush's father. Pratyush returned to the hostel on February 7, a day after attending his cousin's wedding, following receipt of the notice....
