Ex-tmc minister arrested for 'siphoning off' relief material
Kolkata, June 10 -- Ujjal Biswas, former West Bengal correctional home minister, was arrested on Tuesday on charges of siphoning off relief materials such as blankets, tarpaulins and sarees among others, police said.
"Biswas was arrested on Tuesday on charges of cheating, theft and misappropriation of relief materials. He will be produced before the court on Wednesday," said a senior officer of Krishnanagar police district in Nadia.
Biswas a TMC legislator from Krishnanagar Dakshin assembly seat. In the 2026 assembly elections he lost to BJP's Sadhan Ghosh.
"The accused was trying to transport the relief materials to some other locations from his house. Locals stopped the vehicle and informed the police. Biswas was arrested on the basis of a complaint," said an officer.
Some local residents also entered his house when the police went inside to arrest him and hurled eggs at him.
The arrest came after a day of high drama in Krishnanagar, where Biswas faced protests from local residents and BJP supporters over allegations that government tarpaulins were being illegally stored and removed from his residence.
Police said the controversy erupted when several tarpaulins were allegedly being loaded onto a goods vehicle parked outside Biswas's house.
Biswas is, however, not the first TMC leader to be arrested in connection with siphoning relief materials. Several TMC leaders, including legislators, chairman of civic body and panchayat leaders have been arrested over the past few weeks in the same case....
