Ex-CMS' 'digital arrest': One held
Prayagraj, Oct. 6 -- The Prayagraj cyber police arrested an alleged member of an interstate cybercrime gang in connection with a Rs 1.78 crore digital arrest fraud involving a former chief medical superintendent (CMS).
Police have frozen around Rs 64.61 lakh of defrauded amount held in various bank accounts.
The accused, Ayush Awasthi, was arrested on Sunday from his residence in Sikandrabad, Lakhimpur Kheri. Two more accused have been identified on the basis of his interrogation.
DCP Ganganagar Sonam Kumar, while briefing the media at Police Lines on Monday, said the former CMS, a resident of Georgetown, had lodged a complaint with the Cyber Police Station on October 1. Police said Ayush had used about Rs 40 lakh of the amount to purchase insurance policies from two companies, while approximately Rs 8 lakh was traced to current account. Further investigation into financial transactions led police to freeze around Rs 64.61 lakh across different accounts.
Police further claimed that transactions totaling about Rs 3.80 crore, allegedly linked to cyber frauds committed in different states, had passed through Ayush's account. htc...
